What’s new in the 2022 Hyundai Kona?

The 2022 Hyundai Kona has arrived and looks noticeably different with a more distinctive front styling and rear detail. Inside, the 2022 Kona offers a revamped interior along with upgrades to its tech, convenience and safety offerings. Let’s explore the changes in the newest iteration of the Hyundai Kona.

Exterior Redesign

The most obvious update for the 2022 Hyundai Kona is the exterior’s major design refresh, which is the first since its 2018 debut, and gives this compact, sporty SUV a sleeker look with a stretched hood, wider grille, and striking front details like protective cladding and skid plate elements. The bumper fascia seamlessly joins to the wheel arch cladding for a bold, dynamic look, almost armor-like, that contrasts with the body.

The enhanced LED daytime running lamps appear more narrow, which gives the 2022 Kona a more intense presence. At the rear, the new fascia follows the protective, shield-like look of the front with its contrasting material. The wheels get new attractive designs for 2022, too.

Interior Refresh

The 2022 Kona’s interior underwent a more subtle redesign with a new center console that sits separately from the instrument panel for a wider, more spacious look. Other new interior amenities include available ambient lighting for the front cup holders and foot wells, an optional electronic parking brake, and USB-port access for second-row passengers.

Overall, the 2022 Kona is 1.6 inches longer than the previous model. For the interior space, this means increased rear cargo room and second-row legroom.

The 2022 Hyundai Kona no longer has as many trim levels as it did for the last model year and now has an SE, SEL, and Limited trim, with a sportier N Line trim also available with more athletic styling.

Enhanced Engines

Regarding performance and powertrains, the 2022 Kona sees some changes to both of its engines. The standard engine for the SE and SEL models remains the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder Atkinson engine that produces 147 horsepower and 132 lb.-ft. of torque, but now, the engine is paired with a new Smartstream Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) rather than the 6-speed automatic.

For the Limited’s mightier powertrain, the turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder direct-injected engine, the horsepower increases from 175 to 195 while the torque remains the same at 195 lb.-ft. The turbo engine is paired to a re-tuned seven-speed EcoShift® dual-clutch transmission (DCT).

New Tech Options

Tech upgrades lead with the availability of larger driver displays for the 2022 model. On the Limited trim, get a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch color touchscreen navigation display that includes a split-screen function. The SE and SEL trims get larger screens, too, with a now 8-inch display audio (up from 7 inches) and a 4.2-inch color multi-information display that’s upgraded from the 3.5-inch monochromatic display.

Perhaps even more exciting is the standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that comes with the 8-inch display on the SE and SEL models.

Hyundai’s Blue Link® Connected Car System, which is complimentary for three years, features enhancements to make life easier, too. Already the system lets you enjoy Remote Start with Climate Control, Remote Door Lock/Unlock, Stolen Vehicle Recovery and Destination Search by Voice, but now, you have even more capabilities. For example, with remote profile management, the system can now store driver preference settings so that your 2022 Kona adjusts accordingly when a specific driver is at the wheel.

In addition, you can remotely control the heated seat settings, get vehicle status alerts if you leave doors unlocked or windows open, send up to three locations to your vehicle in the desired order of destinations with POI Send to Car now with Waypoints, and more easily view and adjust maintenance alerts.

Superior Safety Systems

The 2022 Hyundai Kona focuses even more on driver and passenger safety with significant updates to its active safety features. Get the available Smart Cruise Control (SCC), which now includes the stop-and-go function.

Another new available feature is Highway Drive Assist, which not only helps keep your Kona in its lane and within a certain following distance to a leading vehicle, but also adjusts speed to posted speed limits on interstate highways.

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist w/ Pedestrian Detection now comes standard on all models and uses a radar sensor and camera to detect potential collisions, applying the brakes if needed.

Additionally, two safety features, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, which helps prevent collisions if you try to change lanes and a vehicle is detected in your blind spot, and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, which helps prevent collisions as you back up your Kona, get upgraded so that instead of just warnings, the brakes will be applied if the driver does not react in time.

Safe Exit Warning (SEW) can warn passengers from exiting the vehicle if it is not yet safe to do so.

The 2022 Hyundai Kona delivers a fresh, modern design makeover, both inside and out, a more powerful engine, and many tech, safety and convenience additions and updates.
